Camera Battery Charging Station

September 23, 2019

If you have just one camera when it comes time to recharge the battery the first thing to do is to actually find the charger. This feat gets more and more complex when you have more than one camera. After trying different organizational tips on how to keep track of what charger for which camera I decide to end the confusion once and for all.

After some Internet searches I settled on the SKÅDIS system at IKEA. The parts that I used are the SKÅDIS pegboard and mounting bracket. The total was about $20. Next a trip to Walmart for a surge protector and a bag of 11 inch zip ties. Deciding on a layout and securing the chargers and cords took about a hour. Once I started the project went quite quickly with only a minor modification to my original plans. The gap in the lower half is for a AA rechargeable battery station that had to be returned because it was defective.

I mounted the board on the side of my workstation so that I will always know the status of my batteries. I wish that I had done this years ago. I always remember an extra battery or two when I leave to go shooting but this has made for a more solid workflow. The locker with my cameras is behind my chair in my office. When I return from shooting I sit at my desk and start copying files. As this process is going I put the dead batteries in their respective chargers. When the batteries are charged I put them back in the bag and return it to the locker. I repeat this workflow every time and now I have the peace of mind that everything is ready next time I go out to shoot.

I should comment that having a reliable workflow and actually using it is a great stress reliever. Once I actually gave a SD card to a complete stranger because he was shooting on location and had forgotten all of his cards. He was devastated and was coming unglued. I think the talk we had helped as much as the memory card. We all sometimes need some help. Pass it on, someday you might need the help of a stranger.

The sharp eyed reader may notice a non-Leica charger above. It is for my LUMIX GH-5 for when I shoot video. It is a great little camera.
